Editor’s Letter:

This week's edit looks at the best of London in three evolving formats - bookshops, pizza and rooftop bars - and what each reflects about how the city has changed.

Independent bookshops have evolved well beyond retail. The strongest now function as neighbourhood cultural spaces - part reading room, part events programme, part community institution. Pizza has become one of London's defining social formats, shifting from casual convenience into something more technically serious and more socially central than it was a decade ago. Rooftop bars, meanwhile, have become part of how the city experiences its own skyline — as more hospitality moves upward into hotels, converted offices and mixed-use developments, the view from above has become a product in itself.

Eighteen places across three roundups. What connects them is not category. It is that each, in its own way, reflects how London now eats, drinks and reads.

PLACE
The Best Independent Bookshops in London

From Daunt Books on Marylebone High Street - its long galleried Edwardian room and books arranged geographically by country - to Brick Lane Bookshop in Shoreditch, Word on the Water on Regent's Canal and the London Review Bookshop in Bloomsbury. Six independents that each reflect a different version of what a bookshop in London can be. The best of them are not simply shops. They are places people return to because of how they feel inside them.

PLACE
The Best Pizza in London Right Now

Starting with Napoli on the Road in Chiswick - currently the most discussed Neapolitan pizzeria in London, with queues forming regularly outside the original Devonshire Road site - to La Luna di Luca in Richmond, Circolo Popolare in Fitzrovia and the Soho original that established the category in Britain. Six restaurants that together map how London's pizza culture has shifted from chain-led casual dining toward something broader, more layered and considerably more technically serious.

From The Reset Series™

If you missed this week's Weekly Reset, we looked at how modern health risk is changing.

Recent coverage explored environmental exposure, infectious disease, digital health systems and the growing importance of recovery and resilience. From hantavirus and travel health to silicosis, red light therapy and NHS data sharing, the focus was less on isolated conditions and more on how health risk now accumulates over time.

Several of the Resets connect naturally to this broader theme, particularly the Stress Reset, Sleep Reset and Histamine Reset - all focused on improving resilience under sustained load.
